CRAU History: CRAU: The Quiet Place
Teddy arrived to the reset room and had the audio function of his collar disabled. Its network search feature linked it to the in game network and he was able to communicate through text with other inhabitants. He had his broken leg splinted by Faith and his injuries healed by Akira. After this recovery he spent his first month patrolling the area and gathering resources. He accepted missions from a former general known as Hux and chose a scarred man as his handler, assuming the man was a capable mission leader and explorer. He worked to make sure the humans in the area with him had plenty of supplies when he could, gaining the assistance of several other characters in his endeavors. During this time he befriended several children and learned that they were not just smaller humans but young humans (human pups/children). Teddy was elected co-mayor of the settlement and worked with other inhabitants to repair and replace the sand paths with longer lasting sandbags and organized a resource hunting team. Throughout his time in game Teddy learned that he could on occasion lead people, and that he did not have to listen to all orders given to him. Finding new ways to help humans brought him closer and he learned what friends were and made several, including Majima Gorō, Kylo Ren, Max Mayfield, Akira Kurusu, Eddie Kaspbrak and Carpet. His time in game made him more self-assured and independent.

Character Details

Personality (Aspiration/Drive): Defending and assisting humans so that their species can continue to survive. Finding ways to make himself useful so that he will not be abandoned.
Personality (Worldview/Alignment): Teddy views humanity as generally good and trustworthy. He believes that people will do what is necessary to survive and that his needs come after theirs. Despite this Teddy fears being abandoned or deemed useless by them. He distrusts the rest of the world/universe, skeptical of the things he encounters and hostile toward other animals besides himself.
Personality (Traits):

Stubborn/Arrogant - Teddy is self-assured and confident in himself and his abilities. When he encounters a problem or puzzle, he will obsessively attempt to locate a solution until he can manage to solve it or until exhaustion forces him to stop. He does not handle failure well, becoming frustrated and irritable when he can't find a solution.

Guardian - He has a 'genuine' implanted desire to help and protect people. He does not recognize this impulse as something unnatural and truly believes that humans need his protection. It is difficult for him to resist this impulse, and if he sees a person in danger, he will put his life on the line to protect them.

Naive/Sheltered - Teddy was raised in a lab-like environment and only taught skills and information that was deemed necessary. There is much about the world, himself and life that Teddy does not know about or understand. His knowledge is limited to things within his necessary skillsets. Even after being abandoned by his handlers, Teddy believes that all humans are creatures in need of his help, and is drawn to trying to help them survive and protect them. He doesn't understand that some humans might have malicious intent or not know what a dog is for by his terms. He knows little about children, pets, or dog lives outside of his trained responsibilities.

Enemy of Animals - Teddy has a strong predatory drive toward all other animals and a fierce rivalry toward other canines. He does not play well with other creatures.

Serious Customer - Teddy has never been allowed leisure time for anything other than sleeping or eating. Training is the only 'playtime' he has ever known and as a result he has a rather serious demeanor and outlook on life. He has only recently begun to understand sarcasm, humor and fun and still struggles with these concepts.

Skills and Abilities:

Linguistics Genome - Level 2 Language Learning Capability. This enhancement enables Teddy to learn languages similar to the way a human can, albeit at a marginally increased rate. With instruction he can learn and communicate in new languages within 2-4 years to a level of secondary education.

Immunity Genome - Minor Increase in Recovery Rate. Despite its name, this genetic alteration does not make Teddy immune. All this modification did was increase Teddy's White Blood Cell count and ability to heal from sicknesses and injuries. The process is not immediate, but he can survive severe injuries with medical care and enough recovery time. It takes less time for him to recover due to an increase in antibody production.

Longevity Genome - 40 year expectancy. A dog of Teddy's size, stature and line of work would be expected to have a lifespan of no more than 5-8 years. Due to the amount of money and resources that went into creating the IEGP canines, they were re-engineered to be given a lifespan around half that of a human. Because the IEGP canines are intended to work hard and long in dangerous environments up to the last years of their life expectancy, they soldier on at a hearty pace. But once the life expectancy is reached, their genetics quickly begin to break down, crippling and de-commissioning the canines in the span of a few short months.

Exploration. Teddy's sense of direction is excellent in regards to always knowing in what direction his base is from where he is. He can not judge distance but he can determine direction to almost a pin point degree.

Sense of Smell. Teddy's canine sense of smell can help him identify and distinguish between items with ease, and locate or track scents. His sense of smell is stronger than the average canine.

Search and Identify. This is what Teddy was trained for. All of his missions involved exploring foreign landscapes and worlds, identifying what might be useful or dangerous, and reporting back with this information.

Upsilon Reporting.

I have made five sweeps of the village and surrounding area since arrival. I am uncertain of the status of my communications but I am compiling a mental map. I haven't been able to get a scent trail that led to anyone other than those newly arrived like myself.

Are there any who would not object to searching with me? I can help you locate whatever it is you seek in exchange. I assure you my success rate is more than acceptable and it can benefit us both. My nose does not seem to be as up to sniff as it was but it works well enough.

The Interdimensional Exploration Genome Project was created out of necessity a century ago, due to the scarcity of human volunteers available and willing to partake in dangerous missions across dimensions. Canine units with one to two human handlers were sent to explore and traverse worlds on the other side of the dimensional portals, searching for habitable worlds and intelligent lifeforms.

The missions are often fatal, and operated with little to no knowledge of what is on the other side, or if the way back home will still be there at the end. Due to the volatile nature of interdimensional travel, these missions are often considered suicidal, though survival rates have increased dramatically over the past 25 years.

The canines of the IEGP are genetically modified to survive harsher conditions, live longer, and be capable of learning and communicating with a variety of languages. While they are not considered to be as intelligent as their human counterparts, many recent canines of the IEGP have displayed excellent abilities for cognitive learning and problem solving, surpassing the results expected of them.

The Upsilon generation is the first in a line of canine genome rebuilding and modification to be sent on these missions alone, equipped with the technology needed to record data of all they see and experience, that can be sent back to base even if the canines themselves do not make it.

Through genetic manipulation, the IEGP has coded what they believe to be the perfect explorers. Intentionally selected and raised to be sociable, self-confident, self-reliant, and assertive, the canines of Upsilon are expected to be natural leaders and brave explorers in the face of unknowable odds and challenges. These traits are the ones carefully coded for in the genome project to help create canine explorers who will not shirk from their responsibilities in the often harsh and unforgiving worlds they are sent to on their missions. Unfortunately, with those traits came less positive attributes. Aggressive, headstrong and even argumentative canines developed as a result of their genetic dispositions. Some became hostile and offensive, as opposed the passive spectators and watchers they were initially designed to be.

The adventurous and independent natures of the Upsilon canines earned them reputations as fearless, uninhibited aggressors, charging into new worlds head first and functioning best when the risks and challenges are at their highest.

Teddy spent the first 13 years of his life in the IEGP Training Facility. His only interactions were with his handlers and other canines of the Upsilon unit. The intense training he was put through from the moment his eyes opened included atmospheric adaptation, simulations, aggressive defense training, scent recognition, threat and resource identification and tracking/directional sense. Much of this training was painful and in some cases, deadly. Only one third of the Upsilon Canines survived to their teenage years. Each of them shared the same designation, and were not differentiated beyond the serial on their neurally-linked collars.

Genetically the canines of Upsilon were virtually identical, but developmentally, each was raised in a different environment. Teddy was designated as a Seeker, and his training reflected this with a heavy emphasis on loyalty training and tracking. He was trained as a search and rescue canine as his side designation.

Teddy excelled at scenting, and proved to be an excellent tracker, if a bit rebellious. He solved problems faster than most of the rest of his unit, and with an ingenuity the other Upsilons lacked. Unfortunately, this ingenuity came with a stubborn streak of arrogance that caused Teddy to rebel against his orders when he believed his own solutions were more effective than his handler's orders.

His directives were set on his thirteenth year: Seek out usable resources, retrieve lost assets, and protect human lives at any cost. These directives were hard-wired neurally. Teddy retained his autonomy, but his instincts were manipulated to make human life more valuable in his mind than his own survival.

For the next three years his training grew more rigorous. He was sent to shadow other canines and their handlers on test missions where the terrain and worlds were considered safe enough to keep a stable portal open. He graduated at the age of sixteen and obtained his upgraded collar before taking his first official mission through an unexplored portal. Teddy survived four missions after his training and grew into a strong-willed juvenile, confident in his skills and dedicated to his missions.

On his fifth assignment he and his handlers entered an unstable portal to retrieve another upsilon unit that had gone offline while returning with vital medical supplies. The world the portal linked to was dark, the sun permanently blocked by a lunar eclipse. Blind in the dark light, Teddy had to rely on his handlers for direction as he followed the scent of his fellow upsilon unit. An hour into the search he picked up the scent of blood just moments before he and his handlers were attacked by the other upsilon unit, crazed and rabid.

Teddy's programmed instincts kicked in, forcing him to attack the other canine unit to protect his handlers. In the fight he managed to take out the other unit, but he was badly injured in the process. His back left leg was broken and his collar damaged rendering his communications and location modules useless. His handlers fled with the medical supplies during the fight, leaving Teddy alone, injured, and virtually blind on the dark planet. He attempted to drag himself back to the portal but it collapsed, leaving him stranded.

World History

Teddy's world was ravaged by famine and biological warfare. The surviving remnants of his world have depleted their own planet's resources and live largely underground in facilities that monitor and engineer everything from food to the very people still living there.

Research in interdimensional studies lead to the capability of interdimensional travel a century ago, and though much of the remaining survivors expressed serious uncertainties and discomforts in regards to the program, the Interdimensional Exploration Project was created. Their goal: Find dimensions of similar nature to their own, to either infiltrate or scavenge resources from. The problem: Most dimensions did not turn out to be similar to their own world, and even more were full of violent and unknown hazards, making travel to other dimensions a suicide mission 9 times out of 10.

The loss of too many explorers lead to the creation of the second branch of the IEP. The Interdimensional Exploration Genome Project was tasked with creating soldiers and explorers from scratch. But due to the time it takes humans to reach an age where they are capable of handling themselves and emotionally stable enough not to go insane from the trip through the IEP's unstable Portal system, they were not a viable test subject. The IEGP chose three animals for their traits and characteristics: Members of the Primate family, for their human like hands and ability to use tools; Members of the Feline family, for their natural predatory instincts and stealth; and members of the Canine family, for their loyalty and obedience.

Through the first trial runs of these genetically engineered explorers, it was discovered that primates with increased intelligence became too self aware and too dangerous to be trusted. Most were intentionally sent through portals that were known to be closing, and abandoned on alternate worlds willfully, to avoid the consequences of dealing with the too intelligent creatures, and their displeasure at being used as tools.

The felines performed admirably in worlds with violent native flora or fauna, but their natural instincts did not incline them to follow orders, and the difficulty of recalling these subjects before unstable portals collapsed led to a loss of resources and a rise in frustration among the IEGP scientists.

Then came the success of the Canine Units. With just one handler, an entire pack of Enhanced Canines could be sent through the portal to perform tasks, and once on the other side, obeyed and protected their human handlers admirably. The IEGP had finally found their perfect tool for the job. But as with any scientists, they were not satisfied just achieving that one goal.

Humans were in no hurry to volunteer for suicidal missions to unknown dimensions, and even with the rate of return expanded to 3/10 units surviving their trips through the portal and back, the number of volunteers dwindled, even as incentives were raised again and again.
